The fruitarian diet consists of only raw fruits, seeds and nuts. Meat, dairy, eggs, vegetables and grains are not eaten on this diet. While it is a limited diet, there are many devoted fruitarians who believe it is the right diet for one reason or another. Fruitarians often weight less than people who eat meats and dairy. Some fruitarians follow the diet for health reasons, while others follow the diet because of ethical or religious reasons. Fruitarianism is common among people of the Jainist religion who believe in harming nothing. Though many people, such as Jainists, follow the diet perpetually, some people chose to do the fruitarian diet for a short period of time only, such as for a few weeks before a big event, to lose weight.
Raw Foods
Not every type of fruit, seed or nut can be eaten on the fruitarian diet. Everything must be eaten raw, or uncooked, in order to preserve the plants' natural enzymes. Fruitarians believe that by eating their foods raw, the plants remain alive and that they can reap the most health benefits from them that way. Raw fruits are believed to cleanse the body of toxins naturally.
Fruits
Fruits are the main component of the fruitarian diet, and are generally eaten in all meals and snacks. In fact, there are some fruitarians who only eat fruits and not nuts or seeds as well. Fruits must be eaten raw on the fruitarian diet so that their enzymes are not destroyed. Canned, frozen or cooked fruits are not eaten on the diet. Fruits are classified on the fruitarian diet as sweet fruits such as dates, figs and berries, and non-sweet fruits such as cucumbers and tomatoes, which are really fruits even though they are often though to be vegetables.
Nuts
Almonds, cashews, brazil nuts, hazel nuts, macadamia nuts and all other types of nuts can be enjoyed on the fruitarian diet, as long as they are raw. Fruitarians purchase their nuts shelled and let them sprout in water overnight before eating them to activate the enzymes. Nuts can be chopped or ground so that different recipes and textures can be enjoyed on the diet, but they cannot be heated. Nuts are a good source of healthy fats on the fruitarian diet, and they have fiber, which helps the fruitarian feel full so they eat less and lose weight.
Seeds
Popular seeds eaten by fruitarians include fenugreek, pumpkin seeds, sesame seeds, sunflower seeds and flax seeds. Seeds, like nuts, are soaked in water before being eaten and never cooked. Seeds provide healthy oils and also B vitamins which promote energy and work in the process of metabolism. Seeds can be eaten plain as a snack or used in a recipe and incorporated in a meal.
Weight Loss
There are two main reasons the fruitarian diet causes weight loss. The first is that since all foods are eaten raw, digestion is enhanced by live enzymes and metabolism is increased. Since so many foods are restricted or limited from the diet, fruitarians usually end up eating a lower-calorie diet than most people, which causes them to become thinner than the general population.
