Zyrtec or cetirizine hydrochloride is an antihistamine that decreases histamine in the body. It is used as a treatment for allergy symptoms, such as sneezing, watery eyes and hives. Allergies are hypersensitive reactions of the immune system where histamines are released in response to the body's detection of antigen or a potentially infectious agent. Consequently, the inhibiting action of the antihistamine reduces the allergy symptoms.
Sedative Effect
Zyrtec can produce several common side effects. These effects include drowsiness (sedative effect), dizziness and fatigue. Another possible side effect of taking this medication is that of headaches as the antihistamine begins reducing symptoms. Lying down may reduce this symptom if it is produced by this drug. Such common side effects of taking Zyrtec usually are short-term as the body gets used to taking this medication.
Allergic Reactions

Other major effects sometimes experienced are hives with itching, swelling of the face and tongue and changes in mood or mental state. Individuals may experience dark urine output and seizures. Also, unusual bleeding or bruising and jaundice have been reported. If any of these side effects occur, seek medical care as soon as possible.

Precautions are necessary if you are pregnant or have recently delivered. Also, the elderly tend to be more sensitive to the effects of this drug and should be monitored closely. Young children should be monitored closely when given this medication because they may experience sleeping problems or stomach discomfort if given this medication.
