Every man and woman gains weight differently, and packs on the pounds in different spots in the body. Some may be pear-shaped, and find that their hips widen as they gain; others are apple shaped and pack extra inches around their waist. You never quite know where that fat will turn up, but for many women, excess fat starts to fill out their breasts.
Breasts and Fatty Tissue
Fat is naturally a part of your breasts, and gaining weight can increase that fat and make breasts bigger. The breasts are made up of different types of tissue, including fatty tissue. Fatty tissue covers the glandular tissues in the breast. When you gain weight, you gain fat --- and extra fatty tissue can develop around the breasts, increasing their size. Losing weight often results in smaller breasts due to lost fat.
Causes of Weight Gain
There are a number of reasons why you may gain weight. Perhaps you've been indulging a little too often in decadent desserts or your favorite French fries. Maybe you're grabbing an extra slice of pizza when you know you shouldn't. decreasing your physical activity may also cause weight gain. Or, you could have a health condition like hypothyroidism, or simply getting older or entering menopause --- all of which can trigger weight gain.
Other Causes of Increased Breast Size
Your breasts may get bigger for a number of reasons, which are not always related to weight gain. Pregnancy can cause breasts to swell and feel larger, as can your monthly menstrual cycle and other changes in hormones. As women age, fatty tissues in the breasts naturally increase, making them larger and often more saggy.
Breast Surgery
If you are unhappy with the size of your breasts --- either too big or too small --- due to changes in weight, you may want to consider breast surgery. Augmentation can increase breast size if your breasts have become significantly smaller following major weight loss. Breast reduction surgery can make large breasts smaller if you have gained weight and breasts are too large and uncomfortable for you. If considering surgery, discuss benefits and risk of breast surgery with a plastic surgeon.
