Field hockey sticks may look the same to casual observers, but they come in not only a variety of shapes but different sizes as well. Like baseball bats, field hockey sticks come in different lengths and weights, so it is important to consider your size and position when choosing the right size stick.

About Stick Weights

Field hockey stick weights are usually given based on the approximate weight for that model's 35- or 36-inch stick, according to Sports Unlimited. Sports Unlimited also notes that each additional inch on a stick will add about 10 g to the weight of the stick. In turn, if you are using a 34-inch stick or smaller, you would take off 10 g of weight per inch shorter of stick length.

Choosing a Weight

You should choose your stick weight based on the position you play, according to Sports Unlimited. Sports Unlimited suggests forwards use the lightest sticks at 19 to 20 oz. because they perform more quick, offensive plays. Midfielders who play both offense and defense are advised to use an average weighted stick of approximately 21 oz., according to Sports Unlimited. Sports Unlimited says that backs should use heavier sticks, weighing between 22 and 24 oz., which enables them to have more power on their swings.

Stick Length by Height

Field hockey stick length is usually based on the height of the player, according to Dick's Sporting Goods. Dick's notes that 36-inch sticks are the most commonly used sticks and are matched to players with heights ranging from 5 feet, 3 inches to 5 feet, 7 inches. Players taller than 5 feet, 10 inches should use a 38-inch stick, according to Dick's. Players 4 feet, 3 inches and shorter should use a 31-inch stick, according to Dick's chart, and with every three-inch increase in height, stick length should in turn increase one inch.

Other Ways to Choose Stick Length

Some players may feel more comfortable playing with a stick that is longer or shorter than the recommendation for their height. Factors like style of play, position and control are important to consider in choosing a stick, according to Dick's. Dick's notes that forwards and midfielders may use a shorter stick because they are easier to handle and control, while defenders could choose a larger stick for more power and range.
