Cellulite is a harmless but unattractive condition that occurs when fat is deposited in pockets just below the surface of the skin. Most women have the lumpy appearance of cellulite on their hips, buttocks and thighs. In fact, according to the Mayo Clinic, about eight out of 10 women have at least some cellulite.
There are a number of treatments and potions that promise to reduce or eliminate cellulite. But according to the Mayo Clinic, most of these declarations turn out to be false. Although there are no magic bullets to make cellulite disappear, there are some at-home steps you can take that might help minimize its dimpling effects.
Massage
Massaging the area of the body that has developed cellulite may improve blood flow while removing toxins and decreasing fluid buildup. The Mayo Clinic mentions a method known as endermologie or lipomassage, which uses a hand-held machine to massage cellulite-prone skin between rollers. This technique may result in a temporary improvement in the dimpling of skin.
Pantyhose
Pantyhose are sometimes used in an effort to reduce the signs of cellulite. These tight-fitting and contouring leg coverings are said to work by compressing fat and improving circulation.
Detoxification
Detoxifying your body by taking such steps as restricting the intake of caffeine, nicotine, salt and fat may help to reduce cellulite. The National Institute of Health (NIH) also recommends staying hydrated by drinking plenty of water and other fluids.
Diet
A diet rich in fiber, vegetables and fruits, especially blueberries as well as soy and nuts, may help fight off the effects of cellulite. In addition, onions, a natural diuretic, can help by encouraging the discharge of water buildup from skin cells.
Exercise
Regular exercise should go hand-in-hand with a nutritious diet. Shedding excess pounds may help lessen cellulite. Working to strengthen the muscles in your thighs and buttocks can also go a long way to minimizing the appearance of dimpled skin. The NIH stresses the importance of maintaining a healthy weight and avoiding yo-yo dieting. While the cellulite won't be completely eliminated, the NIH says consistent physical activity will improve and maintain muscle strength.
