Dopamine IV may be administered in cases of cardiogenic shock, when the heart has been damaged to the point where it isn't supplying enough blood to the arterial system, such as during a heart attack (myocardial infarction). Symptoms indicating a need for immediate medical attention such as dopamine IV include rapid breathing with moist skin, weakness, loss of concentration, and weak, thready or rapid pulse. While administering dopamine by an intravenous route, the patient may experience some side effects.
Cardiovascular Side Effects
Cardiovascular side effects possible from a dopamine IV include both high and low blood pressure readings (hypertension and hypotension), and an irregular heartbeat (arrhythmia)--either too fast (tachychardia) or too slow (bradycardia)--according to Drugs.com.
Local Side Effects
Local reactions at the site of the IV include sloughing of skin, gangrene and even amputation. Because of these extreme side effects, Drugs.com recommends administrating the IV at a central venous catheter, if possible.
Respiration and Renal Function
Respiration and renal function have been known to occur, according to Drugs.com. Breathing may be depressed and renal function may be lessened due to lessened blood flow.
Dermatological Side Effects
The skin surface may show vasoconstriction (narrowing of blood vessels) and make the fine hairs of the skin stand up (piloerection), with shivering as a common side effect, according to Drugs.com. A skin rash may develop as well, though this is rare.
