Tantra yoga is a holistic approach to the study of yoga. Tantra yoga incorporates ayurveda, the Indian medicine system, astrology, alchemy, numerology, physics and psychology. The goal of tantra yoga is to expand awareness in all states of consciousness to create balance. To become a tantra yoga teacher, you will need to complete a tantra yoga teacher training course.
Yoga Alliance
Some tantra yoga certification courses are recognized by the Yoga Alliance, an organization that regulates yoga teaching standards, but some are not. Depending on your teaching goals and the requirements of the facility you will be teaching at, you might want to ensure your course is recognized by the Yoga Alliance. Registration with the Yoga Alliance requires completion of a recognized teacher training, an application and application fee.
Module Training
Teacher training courses that are completed in a workshop format over the course of several months or years are called modules. Namah Shivaya Yoga in Dallas, Texas, offers a 200-hour training course recognized by the Yoga Alliance. The certification requires the completion of specific workshops. The 64 ancient tantric texts are learned in detail as well as healing, cleansing, releasing, purifying and opening techniques.
Retreat Training
Some tantra yoga teacher training courses are offered in a retreat setting where you travel to a location and spend a few weeks or months studying. The Shri Kali Ashram in Goa, India, offers 200- and 500-hour certification programs and both are recognized by the Yoga Alliance. Study includes yoga practice, teacher training sessions and lectures on modern and traditional tantra, yogic philosophy, psychology, sociology and spiritual cultures.
Immersion Study
Another way to study tantra yoga is to find a teacher to study closely with. This type of study is often referred to an apprenticeship. Apprenticeships give you in-depth education as well as opportunities to apply what you are learning. Depending on your teacher's credentials, your apprenticeship might not be recognized by the Yoga Alliance.
