If you or your child ever had an earache, you know how painful it can be. That searing pain feels like it's stabbing deep into your brain. There are many remedies and treatments for earaches ranging from conventional medicine and antibiotics for infections, to numerous home treatments and old time folk remedies whose efficacy has been tested over the years. Check out some of these solutions for relieving the pain of earaches.

Step 1

Try homeopathic belladona for an earache that awakens you or your child in the middle of the night. "Everybody's Guide to Homeopathic Medicines" explains that the earache comes on suddenly accompanied by great pain, throbbing and sometimes redness. The earache may be related to the child teething. The child may have a fever and oftentimes, the earache is in the right ear. This remedy can be purchased at health food stores and should be taken as directed by a homeopath.

Step 2

Use homeopathic Pulsatilla for earaches, especially in children where the pain may be intermittent according to "Everybody's Guide to Homeopathic Medicines." The external ear may be red and swollen, emitting a yellow discharge. There is severe throbbing in the ear, that is worse during the night. Ears feel stopped up. Pulsatilla is great for treating earaches in children who are weepy, whiny and irritable. This remedy can be purchased at health food stores and should be taken as directed by a homeopath.

Step 3

Heat baby oil or mineral oil to body temperature and place a drop or two in the aching ear, suggests Mother Nature.com. Tuck in a piece of cotton in your ear to keep the oil in place.

Step 4

Use heat to relieve ear pain. Turn on the hair dryer set on low. Hold it about 18 to 12 inches from the ear and aim the heat. The warm air is very soothing and helps to relieve pain, says Mother Nature.com.

Step 5

Place a piece of garlic into a sore ear for an old time, folk remedy. Garlic has characteristics of an antibiotic and has been used to treat many kinds of infections. Cut a piece of a clove and place in the outer portion of the ear canal. Put a piece of cotton in to hold in place. Do not push the garlic into the ear. This method of using garlic should not be used with young children who are at risk of shoving the garlic deep into the ear canal.
