The South Beach Diet program for weight loss and maintenance emphasizes healthy food choices and the value of dairy products. You can only eat certain kinds of yogurt throughout the various phases of the diet. When you are considering buying Dannon Light & Fit yogurt at the grocery store, you need to know which products are allowed on the diet.
Background
The South Beach Diet starts with Phase 1, which is supposed to eliminate food cravings and help you lose 8 to 13 lbs. You can eat lean proteins, healthy fats, non-starchy vegetables, some dairy products and sugar-free desserts. In Phase 2, you can add more dairy, some starchy vegetables, some fruit, whole grains and dark chocolate. Phase 2 is supposed to help you lose 1 to 2 lbs. per week until you reach your goal weight. Phase 3 is for lifetime maintenance, and you can have potatoes and all kinds of fruit. Dannon Light & Fit products are allowed in Phases 2 and 3.
Dairy and South Beach Diet
You can have three servings of reduced-fat dairy products during all phases of the South Beach Diet. You can choose 1 percent or fat-free milk, low-fat or fat-free yogurt or reduced-fat cheese. A serving size is 1 cup of milk or yogurt; the equivalent amount of cheese is 1.5 oz., according to the 2010 Dietary Guidelines from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.
Phase 1
Phase 1 of the South Beach diet is the most restrictive. It lasts two weeks and during this time, you can only have plain yogurt. All varieties of Dannon Light & Fit yogurt are flavored, and as such, it is not permitted on Phase 1 of the South Beach Diet. However, you can have low-fat and non-fat varieties from the Dannon All-Natural product line. These come in 6-oz. and 32-oz. containers.
Phases 2 and 3
When you get to Phase 2 and Phase 3 of the South Beach Diet, you can have low-fat and non-fat yogurt that has artificial sweeteners instead of added sugars. All Dannon Light & Fit yogurts meet this criteria. Non-fat Light & Fit comes in 6-oz. cups of fruit-flavored yogurt. Light & Fit Carb-Control yogurts are low-fat; they come in 4-oz. containers. The artificial sweeteners in Dannon Light & Fit yogurts are acesulfame and sucralose.
