What Is a Good Snack on the First Two Weeks of the South Beach Diet?

The South Beach Diet targets weight loss by restricting carbohydrate and sugar intake to maintain balanced blood sugar and insulin levels. The diet consists of three phases; phase 1 lasts for two weeks. Phase 1 is the most stringent phase because only 10 percent of your total calories per day can come from carbohydrates. All breads, fruits and starchy vegetables are forbidden during this phase, so you may have to be creative when it comes to snack time.

Southwest Pepita and Pecan Mix

The South Beach Diet helps take out some of the guess work when it comes to meals and snacks. They provide recipes that are appropriate for certain phases. The Southwest Pepita and Pecan Mix is a good snack during phase 1 because it is high in healthy fats and only contains 5 g of carbohydrates. If you want to make this snack at home, just add pecans, pumpkin seeds and sunflower seeds into whisked egg whites. Then add seasoning to the mix including chili powder, salt,
cumin and cayenne pepper; bake until crisp.

Muenster and Turkey Roll-Ups with Nut Butter

Reduced-fat cheese is often used in the South Beach Diet since it is free of carbs and provides protein and flavor. Muenster and Turkey Roll-Ups with Nut Butter are suggested snacks during the first two weeks of the diet. South Beach recommends muenster or Swiss cheese for these roll-ups because they contain less fat than many other cheese options. Substitute macadamia nut butter for natural peanut butter if you want a new flavor. These are quick and easy to make. Just spread the nut butter on a slice of turkey, place the cheese on top and roll it up.

Spicy Nut Mix

The South Beach Diet suggests their Spicy Nut Mix because it will give you a boost of energy. If you want to make this mix at home, just mix together ground cinnamon, ground ginger, ground cumin, salt, chili powder and ground cloves. Add this mix to whisked egg whites, and then add soy nuts, roasted edamame, pecan pieces, walnut pieces, almonds and granular sugar substitute. Spread the nut mix on baking sheets and bake for 1 hour and 5 minutes. Stir the mix every 20 minutes; take it out when the nuts are dry and toasted.

Green and Yellow Beans with Fresh Mozzarella can make a yummy snack. Prepare this snack by boiling the green and yellow beans for about 3 minutes, then coat them with extra-virgin olive oil, salt, pepper and toasted pine nuts. Top the beans with two large slices of part-skim mozzarella cheese and sprinkle them with sliced basil leaves for extra flavor. This snack only contains 9 g of carbohydrates and supplies 4 g of fiber.
