Vitamin B-12 is a water-soluble vitamin that plays an integral role in the production of red blood cells or erythrocytes, blood vessel and nerve health and metabolism levels in the body. Though medical studies are inconclusive on whether this essential vitamin can increase metabolism, a deficiency of vitamin B-12 causes fatigue and low energy levels. Vitamin B-12 improves blood circulation to facilitate the flow of nutrients and oxygen in the body, which is vital for food metabolism and energy production. You can get the proper amount of B-12 through food, supplements or injections.

Step 1

Consult your doctor about testing your B-12 levels. Report any symptoms you have had, like fatigue or tiredness. A blood test may be needed to confirm if you have a vitamin B-12 deficiency. Discuss treatment options with your doctor.

Step 2

Purchase a vitamin B-12 supplement. Check the ingredients to ensure you are not allergic to any of them. Take 1,000 to 2,000 mcg of vitamin B-12 per day for one to two weeks if are deficient in this nutrient. The dosage will be reduced after this time, as directed by your doctor. Consume the tablets whole with a glass of water. Take vitamin B-12 early in the day, with or without food.

Step 3

Get a vitamin B-12 injection if recommended by your doctor. If you are unable to absorb vitamin B-12 adequately from foods or supplements, an intramuscular injection may be necessary. The injection dosage of vitamin B-12 is 100 to 1,000 mcg once a week or once a month, as prescribed by your doctor.

Step 4

Eat foods containing vitamin B-12. These include whole grains and whole-grain breads and cereals, wheat germ, bran, green leafy vegetables, low-fat dairy products, eggs, meat and fish.

Tips and Warnings

  • Metabolism is a complex process that requires several vitamins and nutrients. In addition to taking vitamin B-12, eat a balanced diet and get at least 20 minutes of strenuous physical activity three to four times a week to improve metabolism and increase the body's fat- and calorie-burning rate.
  • Consult your doctor about increasing your metabolism if you have experienced unusual weight gain, tiredness and fatigue. Disorders such as thyroid imbalances, diabetes, liver problems and other health concerns may be responsible and require accurate diagnosis and treatment. Do not take excess vitamins or supplements, as these may be toxic to your body.
