Types of CPR & Heartsaver Certification

Training in cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) offers individuals an important community health skill and is also encouraged by many employers in an effort to boost workplace safety. Additionally, Heartsaver courses are offered by the American Heart Association to provide CPR and first aid training for businesses and organizations, with additional specific courses to meet emergency preparedness needs.

CPR Certification

Cardiopulmonary resuscitation certification is available through the American Heart Association and the American Red Cross. Both organizations are recognized leaders in CPR training and offer courses designed for the needs of both health care workers and laypersons. Additionally, non-certification courses are offered for those wanting to learn CPR in the event of a community or personal emergency.

Heartsaver CPR

Heartsaver CPR offers training for workplace environments and organizations who wish to have trained responders in case of a medical emergency. Typically 2 to 3 hours long, this course is classroom based and covers basic cardiopulmonary resuscitation and choking emergencies for adults and children. Additionally, training for infant CPR and choking rescue is available with this course.

Heartsaver AED

Heartsaver AED covers the use of an automated external defibrillator (AED) in a cardiac emergency and is an extension of the Heartsaver CPR course. Participants learn how to use an AED in combination with cardiopulmonary resuscitation for adults and children. Or, if participants have previously learned CPR, instruction on AED alone can be initiated.

Heartsaver First Aid

Heartsaver First Aid is a classroom-based course which covers first aid for common medical emergencies such as bleeding, fractures and burns for adults. Intended for businesses and organizations, this course teaches participants how to handle medical emergencies until further medical attention can be sought. The American Heart Association also offers a combination Heartsaver CPR, AED and a First Aid course, about 7 hours long, for complete training in all areas.

Heartsaver Pediatric First Aid

Similar to the Heartsaver first aid course for adults, the pediatric version offers instruction on common pediatric medical emergencies, such as injuries, bleeding and allergic reactions. Additional training on asthma care is available with this course for daycare providers as well.

Heartsaver Bloodborne Pathogens

Intended for workplaces and organizations where body fluid exposure is a concern, the Heartsaver Bloodborne Pathogens course instructs participants about communicable disease and bloodborne illness. This course follows the Occupational Health and Safety Administration guidelines for personal protection against disease transmitted through body fluids such as HIV and Hepatitis B, as well as proper clean-up, handling and disposal of blood and body fluids.
