Losing 5 lbs. in one month is a very realistic goal that can be accomplished by eating healthy and exercising on a regular basis. If you want to look great for a big event, for a family reunion in a month or just want to get healthier, you can make it happen with hard work and determination. If you want to keep the weight off after one month, you'll need to continue the changes that you've made to your lifestyle.
Step 1
Use the American Cancer Society's online calorie counter (see Resources) to figure out how many calories you need to be consuming on a daily basis to lose weight.
Step 2
Eat the right amount of calories, and focus on nutritious foods such as vegetables, fruit, whole grains and proteins. Eat three meals and one snack each day. You should be eating every four hours, starting when you wake up.
Step 3
Take a healthy snack wherever you go in case you need to eat but are too busy to stop whatever you're doing to get something healthy. Some healthy snacks include an apple, a handful of almonds, carrots, and hummus and yogurt.
Step 4
Exercise most days of the week. Aim to do 45 to 60 minutes of cardio six days a week and weight training two to three times per week. For cardio, walk at a fast pace, jog, swim, or do another activity that will get your heart rate up and burn calories. Weight lifting is important because you'll continue to burn fat for hours after you've lifted weights.
Step 5
Reduce your level of stress. Stress can really impede your ability to lose weight, so take a few minutes to write down a few ways you can reduce stress and implement them on a regular basis. Practice yoga or meditation. When you feel yourself becoming stressed, take five minutes to do something to relax such as taking a quick walk or taking deep breaths.
