Infertility is a common issue, affecting roughly one in every six or seven couples, according to the Cleveland Clinic. Several infertility treatments exist, including intrauterine insemination, or IUI. During a round of IUI, the man provides a sperm sample, from which his most viable sperm are extracted. When the woman ovulates, the man's sperm is helped along by being injected straight into the woman's uterus, in hopes that one will fertilize her egg. In general, a healthy weight and nutritious diet are important to promote fertility. If your weight is an issue, here are some guidelines for weight loss during IUI.

Step 1

Check with your doctor first. Harvard Medical School states that weighing too much or too little can interfere with fertility. Even so, only your treating physician can thoroughly assess your situation and advise you regarding weight loss during your round of IUI.

Step 2

Focus on cutting out trans fats, saturated fat, fatty meats, sugary sodas and other junk foods in favor of fruits and vegetables, lean vegetable-based proteins such as beans and legumes, whole grains and plenty of water. These dietary improvements enhance fertility, says Harvard Medical School. The added bonus is that these same dietary changes are advised for effective, healthy weight loss, too.

Step 3

Engage in regular exercise and other physical activity, but clear it with your physician and follow any instructions regarding time when exercise is contraindicated. Exercise will help you burn calories -- essential for healthy weight loss -- and stay physically fit, but in some cases, women may be advised to avoid exercise during treatment with particular ovary-stimulating medications. Follow your physician's advice carefully during your round of IUI.
