Making a Baby Room with Limited Space

When you have limited space and are expecting a baby, it can be discouraging to see pictures of lavish baby nurseries in magazines, knowing that you don't have the space for one. Even if you have a small apartment or home, you can use some decorating tips to make the most of your small space, so that you have a comfortable nursery even with limited space.

Step 1

Look for areas of your home that are underused that you could potentially turn into a baby room. Consider a walk-in closet, especially one next to your bedroom, or a portion of your home office or a section of your bedroom.

Step 2

Put up a screen or a bookcase as a room divider, unless you are using a closet.

Step 3

Paint the baby's area to define it as a nursery space, but choose a wall color that coordinates with the larger space, perhaps a softer shade of the room's wall color.

Step 4

Use a monochromatic palette--several shades of the same color--to give the space a larger feel. The walls could be pale blue, for example, while the crib linens are more vivid hues of blue or prints.

Step 5

Buy sleek, multipurpose baby furniture so that your small space isn't overloaded with bassinets, cribs and changing tables. Look for a crib that is attached to a dresser or changing table. Choose a crib with sleek lines and skip the canopy. A tall, narrow dresser will save space.

Step 6

Buy a small rocking chair or glider that does not require much floor space.

Step 7

Install decorative hooks to hang items on the wall, such as your diaper bag and towels.

Step 8

Put a large, pretty basket under the crib to hold other items, such as diapers and clothing.

Step 9

Install a narrow shelf on the wall for your baby's toys and stuffed animals.
