Cardiologist Arthur Agatston introduced the South Beach Diet to the public in 2003 after he saw a reoccurring weight-loss pattern in his heart patients after following the diet. The nutrition plan targets weight loss by restricting carbohydrates and sugar to prevent high blood sugar and insulin levels. The first phase of the diet is the most stringent, as you are limited to deriving just 10 percent of your total daily calories from carbohydrates. You may experience side effects from this drastic restriction of carbohydrates, as they are a significant nutrient.

Loss of Energy

Your body uses glucose for energy throughout your entire body, from you tissues to your organs. Carbohydrates are used as glucose when they enter your body and MedlinePlus states that, "they are the most important source of energy for your body." When you begin the South Beach Diet you may feel fatigued until your body adjusts to using fat and protein as energy. This transition may take one or two weeks and after the second week complex carbohydrates are reintroduced into your diet. Be careful not to consume excess amounts of caffeine to compensate for the loss of energy during the first phase, as it can lead to irritability, restlessness and anxiousness.

Insufficient Fiber

Carbohydrates are the main source of dietary fiber. According to MayoClinic.com, if you vastly limit your carbohydrate consumption such as whole grains, vegetables and fruit you may be at risk for fiber deficiency. Insufficient fiber can lead to constipation and other gastrointestinal problems. You may be at the highest risk of insufficient fiber during the first phase of the diet, so consider adding a fiber supplement to your diet. Talk with your doctor if you experience symptoms of fiber deficiency that don't subside.

Ketoacidosis

Ketoacidosis occurs when your body does not receive enough glucose to use as energy and begins to use fat for energy. The fat does not get completely broken down, which can lead to excess ketones and acid remaining in your body. This condition can lead to weakness, kidney stones, stupor, coma and even death, according to MayoClinic.com. Consult with your doctor regularly when you begin the South Beach Diet.

Water-Weight Loss

Low-carbohydrate diets have diuretic effects on your body. The initial weight loss may be water weight, which comes back easily once your diet changes. If you are not ready to adhere to the South Beach Diet for a long period of time, lifetime is suggested, then you may gain back the weight you lose when you are done with the diet. Additionally, be sure to drink plenty of water while on the diet to prevent dehydration from the diuretic effects.
