Side Effects of Tizanidine

Tizanidine is a muscle relaxant prescribed to treat muscle cramps or spasms, muscle tightness, or increased muscle tone due to conditions such as multiple sclerosis or a spinal or brain injury. According to the National Library of Medicine, this drug belongs to a group of medications known as skeletal muscle relaxants, which relax muscles by slowing brain activity in the central nervous system. Tizanidine is a short-acting relaxant---its effects occur between one and six hours after taking the prescribed dose.

Gastrointestinal

Several common gastric side effects have been documented, including stomach pain, nausea and vomiting or indigestion. Other effects in this category include diarrhea, dry mouth, or constipation.

Drowsiness

Tizanidine may produce sedative effect. For example, drowsiness, dizziness or lightheadedness may occur. Other potential effects may consist of feeling fatigued or weak.

Psychological

In certain cases, this medication may be associated with feelings of nervousness and anxiety as well as depression or hallucinations. Additionally, the appearance of neurological symptoms of tingling or numbness may present in the extremities, along with confusion, blurred vision and speech difficulties.

Other Effects

In rare cases, major effects may present, such as slow or irregular heartbeat and hypotension (lowered blood pressure). Other rare side effects include liver injury symptoms, such as, jaundice, as well as unusual bleeding or bruising and black stools. The potential is present for frequent urination or painful urination and dark urine output. If any of these signs occur, seek medical attention immediately.
