Nexium, also known as esomeprazole, is a proton pump inhibitor used to treat a number conditions involving excessive stomach acid, such as Zollinger-Ellison syndrome and gastroesophageal reflux disease, or GERD. GERD is a condition in which stomach acid flows back into the esophagus, causing heartburn and sores in the lining of the esophagus. Long-term use of Nexium and other proton pump inhibitors may cause a vitamin B deficiency.
Nexium and Vitamin B Absorption
Nexium works by suppressing the production of stomach acid. Stomach acid, however, is important in the absorption of vitamin B from dietary sources. Because long-term use of Nexium causes decreased stomach acid levels, there is the risk of poor digestion and absorption of B vitamins from food. Patients who take Nexium for treatment of chronic stomach disorders may also need to take multivitamins to prevent a vitamin B deficiency.
Vitamin B Deficiency Symptoms
The B complex vitamins work together to help the body metabolize and produce energy from carbohydrates, fats and proteins. B vitamins are important in the production of red blood cells, DNA synthesis, healthy skin and the maintenance of healthy nerve cells. Low levels of B vitamins in the blood leads to fatigue, anemia, skin problems, and impaired growth and development in children.
Vitamin B Sources
B vitamins are mainly found in whole, unprocessed foods. Sources of B vitamins include meat; fish; poultry; eggs; milk and other dairy products; leafy, green vegetables; beans; peas; and fortified breads and cereals. Vitamin supplements are available for patients who have problems with eating foods rich in B vitamins or absorbing vitamin B.
Nexium Administration
Nexium is available as a delayed-release capsule, which is taken once a day, one hour before a meal. Some doctors, however, prescribe Nexium twice a day for patients with severe GERD or stomach acid hypersecretory disorders. Patients should take Nexium at around the same time every day. Capsules must be swallowed whole. Patients with swallowing problems can open a Nexium capsule and pour the pellets into apple sauce, then immediately swallow the apple sauce and pellets without chewing.
