Phenergan is a medication that belongs to the class of drugs known as antihistamines, according to Drugs.com. It is used to treat allergy symptoms such as skin rashes, prevent motion sickness, treat nausea and vomiting and promote sleep. Phenergan is a available as a tablet or as a suppository.

Central Nervous System Side Effects

Phenergan can affect the brain and spinal cord (special fibers in the back that control movement). According to RxList.com, users may experience drowsiness, dizziness, confusion and torticollis (twisted neck). Tinnitus (sensation of sound in your ears), nervousness, seizures, insomnia and hallucinations are other central nervous system side effects.

Mild Side Effects

Milder side effects of Phenergan include anxiety, dry mouth, stuffy nose, weight gain and inability to reach orgasm, according to Drugs.com. Users may also experience constipation and swelling of the hands or feet.

Cardiovascular Side Effects

Phenergan can also affect the heart. According to RxList.com, Phenergan may lead to hypertension (high blood pressure), hypotension (low blood pressure), bradycardia (slow heart beat) and feeling faint. Patients who experience these symptoms should consult their physicians.

Serious Side Effects

Phenergan may cause serious side effects that warrant immediate emergency help, including trouble swallowing, balance problems, restlessness, high fever and stiff muscles. Users may also experience bleeding, uncontrollable movements, swelling, joint pain, sensitivity to light and chest pain. RxList.com states that Phenergan can impair the ability to drive or operate machinery. This medication should not be taken with such substances as sedatives, alcohol or tranquilizers.

Other Side Effects

According to RxList.com, Phenergan can cause low white blood cell count, low platelet count and agranulocytosis (decrease in special white blood cells that digest bacteria). Jaundice is another of Phenergan's side effects.

Potentially Lethal Side Effects

Respiratory depression (hypoventilation) and apnea (temporary cessation of breathing while sleeping) are potentially lethal side effects of Phenergan. Users can also experience angioneurotic edema and neuroleptic malignant syndrome (condition characterized by a brain disorder and muscle stiffness).
