Fruits are healthy foods to eat as snacks and to include in cooked meals. Fruits provide vitamin C to help your body stay healthy. Fruits are also filling and yet have a low amount of calories. Also, most fruits are low in fat, notes the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. Eating fruits helps you avoid other more fattening commercial snacks like chips and dips that contain too much salt.

Fruits are Low Calorie

A serving of fruit is a healthy, low-calorie snack. One cup of grapes is nutritious and filling fruit snack that contains only 100 calories, notes the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. A banana of a medium size has 105 calories, a medium apple has 72 calories, a cup of blueberries has 83 calories and a medium orange has only 65 calories. A serving of fruit effectively quells your hunger and provides hydration.

Fruits Quell Hunger

Fruits offer a strong amount of soluble fiber. This type of fiber helps you lose weight because the fiber in the fruit makes you feel full. Focusing on eating several servings of fruit each day rather than junk food snacks like french fries helps you satiate hunger without adding a lot of calories to your diet, notes the Colorado State University Extension.

Fruits Contain Fiber

A wide variety of fruits contain a strong amount of fiber. A cup of blackberries has 7.6 g of fiber, a pear has 5.1 g of fiber, an apple with the skin has 3.3 g of fiber, a banana has 3.1 g of fiber, an orange has 3.1 g of fiber, a grapefruit has 2.0 g of fiber and a cup of strawberries has 3.3 g of fiber, notes the Colorado State University Extension.

Eat Fruit Regularly

Eating two cups of fruit a day will help you work toward losing weight, notes WomensHealth.gov. If you are on a 2,000 calorie diet, you can eat the following fruits per day: a small banana, a quarter-cup of peaches or dried apricots and one large orange. Eating a wide variety of fruit regularly helps you maintain control of your diet and to get the most nutrition from the calories you eat.
