Your adrenal glands are located in front of your kidneys and are made up of two functionally distinct parts: the medulla and the cortex. The Thyroid and Adrenal Research Institute states that both parts of your adrenal glands synthesize and secrete hormones. Certain herbs have historically been used to help nourish and support the health and function of your adrenal glands. However, before using herbs for this purpose, discuss the safety and efficacy of herbs with your doctor.
Adrenal Disorders
Several disorders may affect your adrenal glands. The National Adrenal Diseases Foundation states that there are four principal types of adrenal gland disorder, including congenital adrenal hyperplasia, hyperaldosteronism, Cushing's syndrome and Addison's disease. If you have experienced prolonged elevated stress levels, you may also suffer from a condition known as adrenal insufficiency, which involves decreased cortisol production and secretion. Your adrenal glands may respond favorably to natural health methods that support their health and functioning.
Herbal Nutrition
Several herbal remedies may help nourish and strengthen your adrenal glands. In her book "Herbal Medicine From the Heart of the Earth," Sharol Tilgner, a naturopathic doctor and expert herbalist, states that the following herbs may stimulate your adrenal system: Siberian ginseng, ginkgo, oat straw, centella and licorice. These herbs may be especially helpful in treating adrenal glands experiencing diminished function due to unrelenting stress from chronic illnesses or unreasonable work demands.
A Commonly Used Herb
Centella, also known as gotu kola, is a commonly used herb in supporting the health and function of your adrenal glands. Centella, reports Phyllis A. Balch, a certified nutritional consultant and author of "Prescription for Nutritional Healing," helps treat numerous symptoms that may be associated with adrenal insufficiency, including fatigue, depression and reduced sex drive. Centella may also be helpful in treating stress-related adrenal enlargement. This herb should not be used during pregnancy, notes Tilgner.
Disclaimer
Some adrenal gland disorders may cause serious health consequences if not treated properly. Should you develop an adrenal gland disorder, discuss all possible treatment options with your primary care provider. If you are considering using herbs to enhance your adrenal gland health, review all herb-related topics -- side effects, dosage, drug interactions -- with a health care professional who has been trained in herbal medicine. Ask your health care provider about the risks and limitations associated with this natural health measure.
