The 48-hour celebrity juice diet, known as the Hollywood juice diet, is called a miracle diet by its proponents, who claim users can lose up to 5 lbs. in 24 hours and up to 10 lbs. in 48 hours. The website for the 48-hour celebrity juice diet claims many users of the Hollywood juice diet drink it on a weekly basis, enjoying its detoxifying effect. The drinks come in a 32 oz. bottle and are available on the Internet and at groceries stores.

Health Claims

The makes of the 48-hour celebrity juice diet claim it can rid you of headaches, low energy, constipation, premature aging, bloating, gas, depression and poor memory that it says is related to toxins in your body. It claims to restore youthful energy and rid you of acne and skin problems. Not to be confused with other two-day juice diets on the market, the 48-hour celebrity juice diet was created by Sunset Health Products in 1997; its creators say it uses a special formulation of juices that help dieters lose weight rapidly and naturally. The ingredients list a blend of pineapple, apple, apricot, peach, banana, lemon and orange juices, along with vitamins A, C, D, E, B12, B6, folic acid, niacin and riboflavin.

Juice Fasting

Because the Hollywood diet instructs you to drink 32 oz. of its mixed fruit blend, providing a total of about 600 calories, over the course of a two-day period, without additional food, it fits the criteria of not only a juice fast but also a starvation diet. This indicates that any weight lost will primarily be water and lean muscle, not fat. According to a 2007 study published in the "American Journal of Clinical Nutrition," calorie restriction accelerates catabolism, the breakdown of lean muscle. Muscle is denser than fat and requires more energy to maintain, therefore burns more calories than fat. When the body does not have enough calories, it will use muscle before fat, for energy. When your lean muscle decreases, the amount of calories you burn at rest decreases. This explains why fad dieters often gain more weight than they initially lost. They are not burning as many calories as they were before dieting.

In Perspective

Your body needs to burn approximately 3,500 calories to lose 1 lb. of fat. To lose 10 lbs. of fat, your body needs to burn 35,000 calories. The average adult burns between 1,800 and 2,200 calories a day. Adults that exercise burn more. Running 30 minutes on a treadmill burns about 300 calories. To lose 10 lbs. of fat in two days, the average adult would need to do the equivalent of 50 hours of exercise on a treadmill. Since there are only 48 hours in two days, this is not possible.

Scientific Data

According to the Office of Dietary Supplements fact sheets, the fruit juices and vitamins included in the Hollywood diet have no clinical significance in regard to weight loss. There is no research indicating the fruit, or combination of fruits listed, as well as the vitamins or combination of vitamins listed, help you lose weight.

Safety

No fraudulent claims are on file against Sunset Health Products in regard to its statements and claims about the 48-hour celebrity juice diet, but this does not mean that its claims are factually accurate. The 48-hour celebrity juice diet has not been evaluated by the FDA for safety or effectiveness. This diet fits the criteria of a fad diet, a juice fast and a starvation diet. Exercise extreme caution if undertaking this program and do so only under your doctor's supervision.
