Metabolism is described as the body's process of producing energy. Largely controlled by the thyroid gland, metabolism often plays a role in body weight and the amount of food a person needs to eat throughout the day. Some herbs are said to help increase metabolism, assisting some in weight loss or simply increasing the rate at which the body uses food for fuel. Herbal treatments should not be used without a natural doctor's guidance and supervision.

Bladderwrack

Bladderwrack is an herb, also known as Fucus vesiculosus, that contains iodine, which is supportive of the thyroid gland. An underactive thyroid can contribute to a sluggish metabolism. Bladderwrack may be used therapeutically to treat hypothyroidism, or underactive thyroid, in cases where the problem is a result of low iodine. Originating in Canada, this herb is a seaweed that is dried, then cut and sifted, at which time it can be put into capsules for supplemental use. This herb can be harmful if used while pregnant or breastfeeding, consult a naturopathic doctor before use.

Coleus Forskohlii

The herb known as Coleus forskohlii is specifically known as a fat burner because of its effects in stimulating the thyroid and assisting the body in using stored fat as an energy source. Coleus forskohlii also stimulates production of the thyroid hormone. This herb is part of the lavender and mint family and is taken as a dietary supplement daily for a period of time to increase thyroid function. A naturopathic doctor should determine the amount and frequency of doses.

Guggul

Guggul is a flowering plant that helps increase metabolism in the body by improving circulation and lowering cholesterol, which paves the way for better transport of the thyroid hormone around the body. Its spicy and warming qualities may also stimulate the thyroid, increasing metabolism.

Bee Pollen

Bee pollen, considered an herbal treatment once it has been isolated, increases the rate at which the body metabolizes dietary fat. It is important for increasing metabolism naturally by helping the thyroid function well. Its many vitamins and nutrients are especially supportive of thyroid hormone production.
