Reglan, a brand of metoclopramide, is a medication used to treat heartburn and diabetic gastroparesis (condition characterized by nausea, heartburn and poor appetite) by increasing muscle contractions in the digestive system to speed up gastric emptying, according to Drugs.com. Patients should take Reglan for only up to three months or as prescribed by their physicians.

Common Side Effects

Common side effects of Reglan include drowsiness and diarrhea, according to the Mayo Clinic. Patients may also experience bouts of restlessness when taking Reglan.

Serious Side Effects

Reglan may cause serious side effects that call for immediate medical help. These serious side effects include convulsions, swelling, jaundice and hallucinations (hearing or seeing things that don't exist). Patients may also have stiff muscles, suicidal thoughts and agitation. Common symptoms of an allergic reaction to Reglan include trouble breathing, skin welts and swelling of the face, lips or throat.

Rare Side Effects

Rare side effects include chills, stomach pains, fever and fatigue, according to the Mayo Clinic. Headache, lip smacking, urinary incontinence, constipation and breast tenderness are some other rare side effects of Reglan.
