According to the Weight-Control Information Network, 68 percent of Americans are overweight or obese. Being overweight or obese increases your risk for health problems. Understanding what your body mass index should be will help gauge if you are overweight or how close you are to being within a healthy weight range.

Body Mass Index

Body mass index is a screening tool. It reveals possible weight problems and is not a diagnostic tool because it does not address health issues. The BMI calculation was created as a simple way for you to check if you are within a healthy weight range for your height. It can also place you into an underweight, overweight or obese weight range.

Calculation

You must measure your height in inches and your weight in pounds to find your BMI. The BMI equation is simple; multiply your weight in pounds by 703. Divide that number by your height in inches and divide it by your height in inches again. This result will be a number that will tell you in which weight range you fall.

Ranges

A healthy weight range is best because it indicates a reduced risk for weight-related health problems. A healthy BMI is between 18.5 and 24.9, and this is the range you should aim for. You are placed into an overweight range if your BMI is between 25 and 29.9. A BMI that is greater than 30 places you into the obese category. If your BMI falls below 18.5, you are considered to be underweight for your height.

Considerations

Getting to a healthy BMI is one of many health goals. Choosing to follow a balanced diet and exercising regularly can help get you to a healthy weight range. A diet filled with whole grains, lean meats, fresh fruit and vegetables can help you reach your weight goal. You should also include daily exercise to help with weight loss. Visit your doctor if you are concerned about your BMI.
