Common Side Effects of Haldol

Haldol, also known as haloperidol, is a medication that belongs to the class of drugs known as conventional anti psychotics, according to Medline Plus. It is used to treat motor tics (uncontrollable body movements), verbal tics (uncontrollable word repetition), psychotic disorders (mental illness characterized by the inability to distinguish fantasy from reality) and Tourette's syndrome (condition characterized by verbal and motor tics).

Serious Side Effects

Haldol can lead to serious side effects that warrant emergency medical help. These side effects include convulsions, dizziness, easy bruising, bleeding and severe chest pain. You may also experience muscle stiffness, high fever, sweating, mood changes, jaundice and strange thoughts or behavior.

Mild Side Effects

Haldol can lead to such mild side effects as increased salivation, heartburn, diarrhea, nausea, nervousness, agitation, mood changes and breast enlargement, according to Medline Plus. You may also experience increased libido (sex drive), trouble urinating, uncontrollable eye movements, headache and trouble sleeping.

Allergic Reaction

You may develop an allergic response to Haldol. Drugs.com states an allergic reaction includes trouble breathing, hives and swelling of the throat, face and lips. Seek immediate medical attention if you experience these symptoms.

Signs of Overdose

If you take more Haldol than your doctor recommends, you may develop signs of an overdose. Overdose symptoms include stiff or weak muscles, sleepiness, loss of consciousness and slow movements or breathing. Get immediate medical help if you experience symptoms of an overdose to Haldol.
