Acid reflux is a common condition in which gastric juices that contains acid travel from the stomach to the esophagus, causing symptoms such as heartburn, chest pains, difficulty swallowing and regurgitation. Over time, this acid could erode the lining of the esophagus, so it is important to treat this condition. For many people, acid reflux is painful and affects the quality of their lives. Medications, diets and specific sleeping positions are among measures to relieve these often painful symptoms. There are also some helpful holistic ways of treating symptoms of acid reflux.
Herbs
Nutritionist Rudy Silva Fennel suggests that many herbs can reduce acid reflux. The first one is Indian long pepper. This herb is known for being a great digestion stimulant, which reduces acid reflux. A nice warm cup of chamomile or fennel tea can have a cooling and soothing effect on the stomach and the esophagus, which can become irritated due to the acid and regurgitation. Other herbs include licorice root, which protects the digestive system, and barley grass, which can alkalinize the body, reducing acid.
Foods
Foods can holistically alleviate some symptoms of acid reflux. Eating half an apple after meals can help with reflux because apples seem to lower the acid in the stomach. A few tablespoons of apple cider vinegar during an attack with a half a cup of warm water can only stop the attack but stave off future attacks because it neutralizes stomach acid. Dr Andrew Weil suggests that eating a diet that is rich in fiber, at least 40 grams daily, can reduce the symptoms of acid reflux.
Probiotics
The jury still seems to be out as to whether probiotics successfully treat acid reflux. Probiotics are the good bacteria that are found in the digestive tract and can help with digestion. They are being used in more and more foods to aid in digestion. Probiotics protect the lining of the GI tract from harmful bacteria, which can help with digestive disorders such as acid reflux.
