The Effects of Minoxidil

Minoxidil is a medication used to stimulate hair growth. It is especially geared toward people who suffer from a recent bout of hair loss and are less than 40 years old. Minoxidil is available as a topical solution and is usually applied to the scalp twice a day.

Rare Side Effects

Rare side effects of minoxidil include burning of the scalp, acne at the application site, red skin and facial swelling. Facial hair growth, increased hair loss and inflammation at the hair roots are other rare side effects.

Serious Side Effects

You may need immediate medical help if you suffer from chest pain, lightheadedness, tachycardia (rapid heartbeat), or problems breathing when you lie down. Other serious side effects include weight gain and swelling of your hands, face or stomach, according to Medline Plus.

Other Side Effects

Minoxidil can also cause itching, dryness and irritation of the scalp. Minoxidil is available as a topical (directly applied on the skin) agent and should not be consumed. Seek immediate medical help if accidental minoxidil consumption occurs.
