Because of this, the foods you bring in to your body can have a significant influence on how quickly and efficiently your body processes nutrients and calories and passes them through the digestive tract. You can improve your metabolism with a little understanding of how your eating habits affect your metabolism and weight.

Your metabolism is a term used to describe the processes that take nutrients brought into the body and digest them for use and application. All living creatures require these metabolic processes to occur, and your diet greatly influences how efficient the body is. An efficient metabolism is able to streamline processes and make the most out of a small amount of nutrients, which makes your body more effective at digesting the foods you consume and putting them to use.

Consistency is one of the most important aspects of maintaining a high metabolism. Consistency allows your body to work efficiently and according to a set routine. Eating breakfast is one of the most influential factors in determining your body's metabolism because this meal jump-starts metabolic processes in the body and provides fuel to power the body. You can also improve your metabolism by eating more consistently throughout the day -- for example, replace three large meals in a given day with five or six smaller meals. Doing so will keep your metabolic processes functioning, which will let them become more efficient.

Metabolism-Boosting Foods

Many different foods can influence your metabolism. These foods stimulate your digestive and metabolic processes in various ways, achieving an effect of boosting the metabolism. According to ShapeFit.com, soy products are an example of types of food that can boost the metabolism -- soy contains lecithin, a compound believed to help break down fats and prevent them from being deposited in the body. Vitamins C is also believed to have fat-burning qualities. Other foods that can have an effect include garlic, hot peppers and foods containing essential fatty acids.

Considerations

Although some diet pills claim to increase your metabolism through herbal remedies, the effects of these are often overstated and insignificant. Some herbs can be helpful in increasing your metabolism, but the amounts of these herbs found in diet pills are much too small to create any effect. Additionally, your diet isn't the only factor that influences your metabolism -- if you want to increase your metabolic rate, try integrating exercise into your lifestyle.
