Spanish chamomile, often referred to as manzanilla or common chamomile, can be used for herbal medicinal purposes. It is a common practice for some people to drink Spanish chamomile as tea prior to going to bed due to the herb's relaxing properties. Spanish chamomile's benefits include assisting patients with insomnia and with stomach-related ailments such as indigestion. Never begin a chamomile tea regimen without first consulting your physician. Allergies to chamomile are not common but do happen, especially if you are allergic to ragweed or daisies.

Sedation and Relaxation

The AltNature Herbals website states that Spanish chamomile is used as a mild sedative and that the tea has the potential to relax you. Spanish chamomile is purportedly beneficial to individuals who suffer from insomnia. Tea made from this herb also may relax your nerves. In fact, AltNature Herbals states that this herb is so mild and soothing that it even benefits teething infants. In addition, Spanish chamomile is thought to be effective in calming children who have been in a highly emotional condition for a prolonged period of time. According to the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine, chamomile is used to treat anxiety.

Anti-Inflammatory and Antihistamine

Spanish chamomile is both an anti-inflammatory and an antihistamine. According to AltNature Herbals, Spanish chamomile is beneficial to people who have rheumatism and arthritis. People with other conditions that cause swelling may benefit from drinking Spanish chamomile tea as well. Manzanilla may also have an effect on individuals who have mild aches, pains, and flu and cold symptoms. Due to its antihistamine properties, Spanish chamomile can benefit individuals who have allergies.

Digestive System and Reproductive System

Spanish chamomile is used to treat stomach ailments. According to NCCAM, manzanilla is used to help with gas, diarrhea and upset stomach. Additionally, AltNature Herbals says that Spanish chamomile is an antispasmodic, which means that it stops muscle spasms. This is especially true with intestinal cramping. AltNature Herbals and TeaBenefits.com state that Spanish chamomile is used to relieve or ease menstrual cramps due to its antispasmodic properties.

Other Uses

A study published in 2008 in the American Chemical Society's "Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry" showed evidence that chamomile may decrease blood glucose levels, following a 21-day day regimen of chamomile on rats. NCCAM states that chamomile is used to treat ulcers that are a result of some cancer treatments. Spanish chamomile also may improve liver function and boost your immune system.
