1. There is a Diet Plan for Just About Everybody
No matter if you are looking to drop a few pounds to squeeze into a new bikini or trying to overhaul your entire eating habits, there is a diet plan for you. There are low fat, low carbohydrate and low calorie diet programs. There are programs designed to take with special supplements, like the popular Alli program. Other programs closely monitor your food intake, such as Weight Watchers and Nutrisystem. Some plans are designed to work in a few weeks, or even a few days (beware of these) while others target why a person overeats and how to deal with emotional overeating.
2. Some Diet Programs are Just Plain Silly (and Dangerous)
Many popular diet programs currently on the market promise drastic weight loss, sometimes as much as ten pounds in a week. These types of diets, such as the popular Lemonade Diet, cut out solid foods and may incorporate laxatives to speed up weight loss. The problem is that dieters lose fluid and muscle, not weight. As soon as they resume their old eating habits, the weight comes right back. These diets are also dangerous. People who drastically reduce their calorie intake risk vitamin deficiencies and weakened immune systems.
3. Diet Programs can fit Every Budget
Some people (Hollywood people, that is) pay big bucks for customized diet plans from places like Canyon Ranch Spa or with personal nutritionists like Bob Greene. The rest of us have to make do with less spectacular diet plans. It's a good thing that there are plenty of diet plans available for most budgets. There are several good diet books on the market (including ones from Canyon Ranch and Bob Greene) that give detailed diet programs as well as advice on how to lose weight and keep it off. If you need some moral support, Weight Watchers and Jenny Craig programs are available in most areas at modest monthly fees.
4. Read the Directions if You Want it to Work
Dieting, no matter what plan you are on, will only work if you work. If you "cheat" on your diet, it isn't going to work. It's as simple as that. So when looking for a diet plan, think about what you can really do. If you hate soup, then the Soup Diet probably isn't for you. Ditto for the Coconut Diet, Lemonade Diet and Cookie Diet. Yes, there is a Cookie Diet. If you can't live without chocolate (and who can) then look for a plan that allows you to have some chocolate.
5. Talk to Your Doctor First
It is vital to discuss any diet programs with your doctor before starting. Certain diet plans may aggravate existing health conditions. Your doctor can help you find the plan that is best for you and your weight loss goals.
