People who eat breakfast tend to be thinner, on average, than those who skip the most important meal of the day, according to Reuters Health, reporting on an article in the "American Journal of Clinical Nutrition." Furthermore, the study showed that those who eat foods for breakfast that are low in both calories and energy density, which means that a smaller portion of the food is necessary to provide satisfaction and reduce hunger, tend to choose healthier foods throughout the course of the day. Try to eat low-calorie breakfast foods for optimal health and to help you lose weight.
Oatmeal
The Breakfast Research Institute lists oatmeal is a healthy and low-fat food to eat for breakfast. Use instant, quick, or traditional oatmeal, depending on how much time you have and your taste preferences. Add high-fiber, tasty additions, such as apples, cranberries, apricots and bananas to plain oatmeal to round out the meal. See the Breakfast Research Institute recipe for Berry Almond Crumble Oatmeal in Resources.
Cold Breakfast Cereal
Several healthy cold breakfast cereals are both low in calories and filling. Dr. Diana Mirkin suggests reading the ingredient list and nutrition information carefully to make a good choice when considering the options available at the grocery store. A whole grain, such as wheat or oats, should be the first ingredient. Avoid partially hydrogenated oils and added sugars. Look for a high fiber content. Some of the cereals Dr. Mirkin recommends include Cheerios, Wheat Chex, Grape Nuts, Grape Nut Flakes, Kashi, Shredded Wheat, All-Bran and Raisin Bran. Eat these cereals with low-fat or fat-free milk.
Fruit
Fruit is low in calories and also provides nutrients and vitamins you will need throughout your day. Since most fruit is not very filling, pair it with a protein, such as low-fat yogurt to keep you satisfied through the morning. Eat this as a parfait, or use your blender and make a smoothie. See the Orange Banana Yogurt Smoothie from the Breakfast Research Institute in Resources, and feel free to substitute your favorite fruits, such as peaches or strawberries, for the bananas.
