Cortef is a brand name for hydrocortisone, a corticosteroid prescription drug used to treat inflammatory diseases such as arthritis, thyroid disorders, gastrointestinal conditions, severe allergies, asthma and certain types of cancers. Cortef has potent effects on the body and should only be taken under the guidance of a doctor. Corticosteroid drugs reduce the activity of the immune system and can cause serious side effects. Licorice is taken as a supplement or extract to soothe sore throats, respiratory illnesses and for other reasons. However, the benefits of this herb are not yet confirmed. Licorice can also adversely interact with corticosteroid medications by increasing their effects. Do not take licorice while you are taking Cortef or other steroid medications.

Step 1

Consult your doctor about how to take your Cortef prescription medication. Discuss the possible side effects that corticosteroid drugs can have on the body. Inform your doctor of all other medications and supplements you are taking concurrently. Stop any prescription or herbal drug that may interact with Cortef.

Step 2

Take the daily prescribed dose of Cortef with food to decrease gastrointestinal upset. The dosage for Cortef tablets varies from 20 to 240 mg per day depending on the reason for use. Your doctor may change your dose as needed. Take this medication at the same time each day. If you are taking Cortef in the morning swallow the tablets whole with a glass of water when you are eating breakfast.

Step 3

Ingest this medication at the same time each day. If you are taking Cortef in the morning swallow the tablets whole with a glass of water when you are eating breakfast. If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember, if it within the same day, but do not double your daily dosage.

Step 4

Do not stop Cortef doses abruptly. Your doctor will taper off this medication to avoid withdrawal side effects. If you want to take licorice supplements after you have stopped Cortef, ask your doctor when it is safe to do so. Licorice may increase steroid levels in the body, causing or worsening side effects.

Step 5

Consume the recommended dosage of licorice once you have stopped taking Cortef and your doctor advises that it is safe for you to take this herb. The recommended daily dose of licorice is 250 to 500 mg, three times a day. However, licorice should not be used for longer than one week at a time unless your doctor recommends taking it for longer durations.

Tips and Warnings
