Weight loss boot camps for women have become all the rage in the fitness industry. Whether you're in Wahoo, Nebraska or sunny L.A., chances are, you can find a boot camp class at a gym. Boot camp workouts are an effective way to get fit and lose weight--and they're fun. An article in the Nov. 17 issue of "The Baltimore Sun" rates boot camps as one of the top 10 fitness trends of 2009.
Benefits
Aside from the physical benefits of working out, boot camps for women offer something more. Working out in a group setting provides motivation and some friendly competition. Group dynamics can give you that extra push. As you all work toward your goals, the successes of the individual become the successes of the group.
What to Expect
Most weight loss boot camps for women are cardio-intense. Cardio, after all, is the best way to burn calories. You can burn as many as 600 calories in a one-hour class. Depending on the boot camp, you may be running, sprinting and doing agility drills. Some trainers bring exercise equipment, but most rely on body-weight exercises; so expect a lot of push-ups and squats. Boot camps are really a "back to basics" type workout. You'll get a full body workout that's fun, challenging and offers enough variety to keep you interested and engaged.
Considerations
With the rising popularity of boot camp workouts, many fitness trainers have jumped on the bandwagon. Unfortunately, not all are qualified. Do your research. Make sure the boot camp you plan to attend is led by an experienced fitness professional. Ask about the professionals' credentials and experience and make sure they are CPR/AED certified. Safety should be a top priority.
Misconceptions
Gone are the days of drill sergeant type trainers that yell at you to "Drop and give me 20!" These days, most trainers take a kinder, more encouraging approach to inspire and motivate you.
