The colon is the part of the large intestine between the cecum and the rectum and is approximately six feet in length. The colon is responsible for extracting moisture from solid waste before it is excreted by the body. A colon cleanse is often prescribed to patients prior to a colonoscopy, a diagnostic procedure in which the colon is checked for disease or abnormalities. Powdered calcium bentonite is used for many prescription colon cleanses. Colon cleanses should only be performed under the direction and supervision of a physician.
Step 1
Mix 1 tbsp. of calcium bentonite powder with 8 oz. of water. Stir the mixture until there are no clumps of the powder in the water and the water appears uniform throughout.
Step 2
Drink the calcium bentonite solution immediately. The calcium bentonite will settle at the bottom of the glass if left sitting.
Step 3
Drink a glass of water mixed with calcium bentonite powder every three to four hours for one day, or as directed by your physician.
Step 4
Eat and drink only clear liquids while colon cleansing. Clear liquids include apple juice, water, broth, gelatin and popsicles. Avoid red foods and drinks, as these can leave your colon with a red appearance and make it difficult for your physician to determine if you suffer from internal bleeding during your colonoscopy.
