Shin splints, also known as sore shins, cause pain on the inside of the lower leg. The National Health Service of the United Kingdom states that shin splints are usually caused by the swelling and inflammation associated with micro-fractures on the surface of your tibia, the larger of the two bones in your lower leg. Shin splints, also known as medial tibial stress syndrome, often occur following intense physical activity, states the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons. MSM, notes Balch, is a sulfur compound that is required for reducing both pain and inflammation. This supplement has also been used to help repair damaged tissues. MSM has historically been used in treating pain and inflammation, gastrointestinal problems, allergies, low immune function, arthritis, migraines and muscle pain. MSM may be required to achieve optimum long-term health.
