Human growth hormone, or HGH, supplements, which are available at most major health food stores, are a natural alternative to the prescription medication used to treat pituitary tumors. In contrast to their pharmaceutical counterpart, natural HGH supplements are made from herbs or natural stimulants that are described as precursors to HGH. This means that HGH supplements affect your endocrine system by increasing the amount of HGH it produces. HGH supplements are marketed as a bodybuilding supplement that can increase muscle mass as well as metabolism. Check with your doctor before using an HGH supplement.

Step 1

Choose a supplement in a form that works with your lifestyle. If you are on the run, capsules, oral spray or tablets may be easier to take with you than a powder that needs to be mixed with water or milk. Read reviews of HGH supplements online, written by people who have used them. Finally, if you will be using an HGH supplement in powder form, check online for vendors who carry it in larger quantities, to save you money.

Step 2

Take your HGH supplement 45 to 60 minutes before or after a meal. HGH supplements work best on an empty stomach, allowing maximum absorption of the product without interference of digestion. If you have a sensitive stomach and find it difficult to take a supplement on an empty stomach, try drinking a glass of water with the supplement. An oral spray version of HGH supplements may also be helpful, since it is absorbed sublingually and not in the stomach.

Step 3

Use your HGH supplement just before going to bed, if recommended by the manufacturer. Many HGH manufacturers do recommend that you take their product just before retiring to bed because it allows your body to use the supplement to manufacturer HGH while you sleep. According to the National Sleep Foundation, the quality and duration of your sleep declines as you age and, simultaneously, your body's levels of HGH decline. Supplemental HGH therefore may be helpful in improving and increasing your sleep. Check the label of the supplement you choose for sources of caffeine, which can disturb sleeping patterns.

Step 4

Limit your use of HGH supplements, according to the manufacturer's specifications. Depending on the supplement you choose, you may need to take HGH regularly or for several weeks or months before discontinuing it for a period of time. Some HGH products suggest that you take the supplement for five consecutive days and skip two days each week. Check the label on your supplement for any specifications for using your HGH supplement.
