What Can Vinegar Do for Your Health?

There is no doubt that vinegar has a unique smell; in fact, you may have been struck by the smell in your grandma's kitchen while she pickled cucumbers from her summer garden. But this acidic liquid does more than just make pickles. Though vinegar is strong, so are the health benefits.

Treat Yeast Infections

By adding one cup of vinegar to a hot bath and then soaking for up to 30 minutes, you can treat internal and external yeast infections. Yeast infections are caused by an overgrowth of yeast in the body. This type of infection can present as either a red, raised rash on the external genital area -- which would be classified as an external yeast infection -- or as internal itching and discharge similar to cottage cheese -- which is an internal yeast infection. You can use either white or apple cider to your bath, since both are effective.

Aids in Calcium Absorption

Vinegar is effective in aiding the body with calcium absorption, reports Discovery.com's Planet Green. By using vinegar-based dressings with your salads, you can reap the benefits while enjoying a nutritious meal.

Regulates Blood Sugar in Diabetics

According to a study published in the 2004 edition of "Diabetes Care," and conducted by C.S. Johnston and associates, vinegar works to improve insulin sensitivity in those with type 2 diabetes. This aids the body in processing blood sugar and therefore helps to regulate the blood sugar levels. To benefit from vinegar when you are a type 2 diabetic, combine a tolerable amount of vinegar -- based on your tolerance to the taste -- with a glass of water before your meal.

Considerations

Before using vinegar to treat any illness or disease, consult your physician. Also, vinegar may cause irritations when used directly on the skin. Always dilute vinegar in water before applying.
