Nutritional therapy involves the practice of using natural nutrients in food and in supplements for holistic health. Similar to fat distribution, your wrinkles are pre-determined in your genes. However, excess sunlight exposure, smoking and environmental toxins may add to that number. Supporters of nutritional therapy say there are natural ways to repair skin damage, whether the concern is aging spots, wrinkles or loss of firmness and radiance.

Step 1

Incorporate alpha hydroxy acids, or AHA, in your diet to boost elastin, the substance responsible for the elasticity of your skin. AHAs come in supplement form or in certain foods, including milk, apples, pears, grapes and some citrus fruits. The acids range from lactic to glycolic, depending on the source, but they are all a form of AHA.

Step 2

Consider the enzymes for skin support, such as coenzyme Q10. This enzyme is gaining popularity for its many purported health benefits and is used either topically or taken by mouth. Some food supplements with coenzyme Q10 include extracts of pomegranate, aloe and ginger, but with conflicting study results.

Step 3

Keep your skin firm and healthy with a complement of vitamins. The antioxidant vitamins include vitamins A, C and E. These antioxidants protect the skin from harmful rays of the sun that can increase the appearance and number of wrinkles. Vitamin C has a specific role in the development of collagen, which is the substance that makes the skin plump and smooth.
