Opiates are a class of narcotic drugs used to treat moderate to severe pain. These drugs are psychologically and physically addictive, which means you might suffer withdrawal symptoms after prolonged use. Although usually not life-threatening, these withdrawal symptoms can be very uncomfortable. Using dietary supplements might help you recover from opiate withdrawal more comfortably. Discuss supplements with your physician prior to starting them -- you do not want to take anything that might set back your recovery.
Step 1
Combat the withdrawal symptoms of fatigue and anxiety that can impact your ability to function with the herb valerian root, which is available in capsule form or in teas and is purported to induce relaxation and calm anxiety. This herb is not meant for long-term use -- research indicates that up to six weeks of use is safe.
Step 2
Get some healing rest. Insomnia is a common complaint during opiate withdrawal. Over-the-counter supplements such as melatonin might help you fall asleep at night. Melatonin is a naturally occurring hormone that readies the body and mind for rest.
Step 3
Help your liver do its natural function -- cleansing the body of toxins, including leftover opiates. Supplements that might promote liver health include the herb milk thistle. Keep the liver healthy so it can filter and remove the opiates from your tissues.
Step 4
Remove the free radicals, or toxins, that build up during periods of stress, such as during an opiate detox. Antioxidants bind to these free radicals and remove them from the body. Vitamins A, C and E are antioxidants, as are berries such as acai.
