The immune system protects your body from pathogens, or disease-causing agents such as viruses and bacteria. The immune system is an elaborate network of tissues, cells and organs that protect you from foreign invaders, and your immune system peacefully coexists with other cells in your body. Certain supplements may support your immune system, but you should always discuss the merits and drawbacks of supplements with your doctor before taking them.
Weak Immune System
Immune system disorders usually fall into one of four principle categories: primary or acquired immunodeficiency disorders, autoimmune conditions, allergic disorders and immune system cancers. You may be born with an immunodeficiency disorder, or you may develop this condition secondary to infections or the use of certain prescription drugs. Autoimmune conditions are conditions in which your immune system mistakenly attacks your own healthy tissues, while allergic disorders occur when your body's response to environmental antigens is overly robust. Immune system cancers occur when your immune system cells grow at an uncontrollable rate.
Helpful Dietary Supplements
Numerous dietary supplements may be helpful in supporting your immune system or treating immune system problems. Certified nutritional consultant Phyllis A. Balch, author of "Prescription for Nutritional Healing," reports that both herbal and nonherbal supplements may be used for immune system problems. Examples of helpful herbal supplements include astragalus, goldenseal and ligustrum. Examples of helpful nonherbal supplements include acetyl-L-carnitine, acidophilus and glutathione. More research evidence may be required to support the use of supplements in treating your immune system problems.
Supplement in Focus
Acetyl-L-carnitine is a frequently prescribed supplement in the treatment of immune system problems. Acetyl-L-carnitine, a carnitine derivative synthesized naturally in your body, has historically been used to enhance the immune system, protect the body from oxidative stress and stimulate the antioxidant activities of various enzymes. The Linus Pauling Institute reports that acetyl-L-carnitine may help prevent certain age-related declines in rats, although more research is required to support the efficacy of this supplement for this purpose in humans.
Additional Information
A weak immune system may indicate a serious underlying pathology or condition that requires medical attention and intervention. If you suffer from a weak immune system, meet with your health care practitioner to discuss the treatment approaches from which you may benefit most. Dietary supplements, though usually safe and helpful, may not be appropriate for you and your existing health complaint. A qualified health care professional can assess your condition and counsel you on what supplements to take and how to take them.
