The South Beach Diet is one type of a low-carbohydrate diet that focuses on healthy carbohydrates and lean proteins. Dr. Arthur Agatston, the creator of the South Beach Diet, determined that this type of diet not only aids in weight loss but may reduce risks for cardiovascular disease. Lean meats such as pork chops fit well with the South Beach Diet, but you should also know recommended serving sizes and other protein options for a successful weight-loss journey.

Serving

Pork chops provide a lean source of protein, but you should trim away any excess fat from the chop before cooking. Once you sit down to dinner, begin with approximately a 3-ounce portion, along with steamed vegetables and other allowed side dishes, which will depend on which phase of the diet you currently follow. If you eat the first helping and find yourself hungry afterward, go back for an extra serving. Before you reach for that extra helping, assess your body so that you eat because of hunger and not because the food is there, or because other people at the table continue to eat. Making these assessments will help you during your weight-loss program and afterward as well.

Other Cuts of Pork

In addition to pork chops, you may also select other lean cuts of pork, such as a roast or tenderloin. You may also eat boiled or smoked ham, but you cannot have honey ham due to the sugar content. Do not eat pork products such as bacon or pork rinds since these products have a high fat content.

Other Protein Sources

You can choose other protein sources besides pork. These proteins include lean cuts of beef, such as tenderloin or sirloin, as well as skinless turkey or chicken breast. All types of fish and seafood make good protein choices, and the South Beach Diet also allows you to eat soy-based products such as tofu and soy crumbles. You can choose any type of bean, including canned or frozen, but these products must not contain fat or added sugar.

Considerations

For the best results on the South Beach Diet, make out a menu that will take you through a few days or a week. This will help you evaluate the variety of foods you consume on the plan since pork chops alone will not provide you with the necessary nutrients you require. Couple your proteins with steamed or fresh vegetables, and allow a dessert for a treat at the end of the day. Planning and rewards will keep you on track with your weight loss.
