Understanding cholesterol is extremely important, especially if you are at risk for heart disease. Getting your total cholesterol level under control is a key component to ensuring a healthy life.
Types of Cholesterol
Total cholesterol is a combination of the two types of cholesterol; LDL, the "bad" cholesterol, which clogs your arteries, and HDL, the "good" cholesterol that has the opposite effect.
Total Cholesterol Level
A level below 200 mg/dL is desirable. From 200 to 239 mg/dL is borderline high, with any level above that being considered high.
Food Sources
LDL is commonly found in animal products such as meat and eggs. HDL, however, can be found in foods like nuts and olive oil.
Dangers of High Cholesterol
Cholesterol accumulates on the walls of your blood arteries. These deposits affect blood flow through your body. Over time, this can lead to chest pains and even a heart attack or stroke.
When to get Tested
Even if you eat properly and exercise, high cholesterol can still be a problem if it runs in your family. Therefore, it is important to get a baseline test at age 20 and get tested every five years following that to monitor cholesterol levels.
