Low-carbohydrate diets such as the South Beach Diet are all the rage, but how effective is this type of eating plan? In 2010, Maryann Enge shared her weight loss story, proving that by following the South Beach Diet, the weight can come off. It took her nearly two years, but she lost 174 pounds and improved her health. Even though Maryann and others lose this amount of weight, you may have different goals that the South Beach Diet can help you achieve.
Phase 1 Loss
The South Beach Diet breaks down into three phases, each one allowing different foods. During the first phase, which lasts two weeks, the South Beach Diet eliminates carbohydrates and sugars with the intent of stopping your cravings, as well as to give you a quick boost in weight loss. Dr. Arthur Agatston, the creator of the South Beach Diet, says you could lose between eight and 13 pounds during this phase.
Goal Weight
After the initial two weeks on phase one, you will then step into phase two where you can reintroduce certain foods back into your diet, including whole grains and other nutritious carbohydrates. This second phase is intended to last until you reach your goal weight. Dr. Agatston claims most people following the South Beach Diet will lose one or two pounds each week during this phase of the plan. You will remain on this second phase until you've made it to your healthy weight.
Once you meet your ultimate weight loss goal, you move onto phase three of the diet. This maintenance phase allows you to eat all foods in moderation, keeping in mind the lessons you learned during your weight loss journey, such as selecting low-fat proteins and other healthful choices.
Making It Work
Weight loss is a challenging process, and following a diet plan, such as the South Beach Diet, that requires you to eliminate some foods altogether, at least for a short time, may add extra difficulty. Learn as much as you can about the foods you can eat during each phase, and which ones you should avoid. Also, you may want to begin the diet plan with a friend so that you can encourage one another and offer support on difficult days.
