Systemic lupus erythematosus, or SLE, a chronic health condition, causes numerous symptoms -- including skin symptoms -- in various parts of your body. The Lupus Canada website reports that lupus is not contagious, and that it is part of a disease family that includes several well-known conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis, multiple sclerosis and juvenile diabetes. If you are considering incorporating herbal remedies into your lupus treatment plan, first discuss all aspects of herbal therapy with your family doctor.

SLE Information

SLE, or lupus, is a condition in which your immune system attacks various cells and tissues throughout your body. Lupus, notes the National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases, can damage the following structures in your body: joints, skin, kidneys, heart, lungs, brain and blood vessels. There are numerous kinds of lupus, and anybody may develop this condition. A red rash that appears on your face is one of the most easily observable signs associated with this condition. Women are much more likely to suffer from lupus than men.

Appropriate Herbal Remedies

There are numerous herbal remedies that may be appropriate in treating SLE and its symptoms, although more scientific research may be required to validate the use of herbs in the treatment of lupus. According to certified nutritional consultant and nutrition researcher Phyllis A. Balch, author of "Prescription for Nutritional Healing," some of the most effective herbal remedies for this condition may include goldenseal, feverfew, pau d'arco, red clover and burdock. Stinging nettle, cordyceps and reishi mushroom may also be helpful.

Herb in Focus

Pau d'arco is an herb that may be frequently prescribed to help treat lupus symptoms, including skin problems. Pau d'arco has historically been used to help treat rheumatic conditions, notes naturopathic physician and herbal medicine expert Sharol Tilgner, author of "Herbal Medicine From the Heart of the Earth." Pau d'arco may help support your immune system and treat a wide range of skin problems. This herbal remedy has long been used by the indigenous population of Brazil.

Warning

There are numerous possible health complications associated with lupus. If you have lupus, review all possible treatment options with your physician or health care provider. Herbal remedies will not cure your lupus, but they may help keep your lupus-related symptoms, including skin problems, in check. Certain herbs that have historically been used in treating this condition may not be appropriate for you. Ask your doctor about proper dosage and methods of use before using herbs to treat your lupus.
