Strength training is an important component of any exercise program. Adding lean muscle can boost your metabolism and give you a more toned appearance. There are several modalities available for strength training but among the oldest are resistance bands and free weights.

Benefits

Resistance bands provide a constant force throughout the movement while the force applied by weighted resistance changes during the movement.
Resistance bands are the better option for the frequent traveler. They are easy to pack, take up very little space, and weigh next to nothing. Resistance bands are also an easier option for the person that wants a home gym but has limited space. They come in a variety of tensions and can provide an excellent workout for the novice up to the heavy lifter.

Function

Free weights and resistance bands are both used for strength training. They can both be used to train at home or at your local gym.

Cost

When comparing cost, resistance bands are the less expensive option. Free weights can cost 10 cents to $1 per pound at major retailers where resistance bands come in a variety of strengths and may not cost more than $20.

Types

Free weights are defined as any type of equipment that is not attached to a cable. Free weights come in a variety of weights. Dumbbells, barbells, weighted bars, weighted plates, and even kettle bells are considered free weights.
Resistance bands come in a variety of tensions. The color usually denotes the tension of the resistance band, light colors indicate light tension and dark colors indicate heavy tension. There are resistance bands on the market with handles, without handles, with Velcro, and enclosed circles of resistance bands to fit around the ankle for exercise.

Warning

Use proper lifting techniques when resistance training regardless of the modality. Check resistance bands for holes before use. And use a spotter when lifting heavy free weights.
