Fibroids, also called fibromyomas, are noncancerous growths in the uterus. Although up to 75 percent of women have uterine fibroids, many experience no symptoms. If your fibroids cause pain, heavy menstrual bleeding, urinary problems or constipation, your doctor may suggest medications or surgery. Dietary changes do not seem to cure fibroids, but emphasizing particular foods in your diet may help prevent or reduce your symptoms. For best results, seek guidance from your doctor or dietitian.

Whole Grains

Whole grains contain all the nutritious parts of the grain. Because of this, they provide more protein, fiber and protective nutrients than refined grains, such as white flour. A diet high in refined foods promotes production of estrogen, a hormone that often "feeds" fibroids, according to anthropologist and holistic health practitioner Eve Agee. In her book, "The Uterine Health Companion: A Holistic Guide to Lifelong Wellness," Agee recommends a natural diet, rich in whole grains, as a useful way to improve your nutrient intake, lower excessive estrogen levels and minimize fibroid-related pain. Nutritious examples include oats, brown rice, wild rice, quinoa, whole-grain breads and cereals and pearl barley.

Fruits and Vegetables

Fruits and vegetables contribute rich amounts of antioxidants, nutrients that help keep your immune system strong. Agee recommends cutting back on sugary foods and beverages and consuming more fruits and vegetables -- preferably organic. Choose whole, fresh varieties over juices and sweetened dried or canned fruit, which provide less fiber and may affect your hormone levels. Fruits and vegetables particularly rich in antioxidants include berries, cherries, kiwi, guava, citrus fruits, tomatoes, leafy greens, broccoli, winter squash and bell peppers.

Fish

Fish is a rich protein source that provides less overall fat and saturated fat than red, fried and processed meats. Red meat and fatty foods often stress the liver and may worsen fibroid symptoms. The saturated fat in meats may also increase inflammation. To prevent these complications, choose baked, broiled, poached or grilled fish instead of meat regularly. Cold-water fish, such as herring, lake trout, flounder, halibut, salmon and sardines, provide the added benefits of omega-3 fatty acids, which may reduce pain and inflammation.

Flaxseed, Walnuts and Canola Oil

Flaxseed, walnuts and canola oil are the top plant-based sources of omega-3 fatty acids. Low omega-3 fat levels have been linked with fibroid symptoms among women with breast cancer, according to Agee, who suggests increasing your intake of healthy, unsaturated fats. Choose ground flaxseed for maximum absorption. For heightened benefits, replace unhealthy fat sources, such as butter, margarine and fried foods, with flaxseed, walnuts and foods prepared with canola oil. Fats also promote the absorption of fat-soluble vitamins A, D, E and K, so aim for nutrient-rich meals containing healthy fats.
