High blood pressure -- also called hypertension -- is a highly prevalent cardiovascular risk factor throughout the world, due to increased human longevity and a host of other factors, including obesity, according to the World Health Organization. High blood pressure develops gradually and may respond to natural treatment methods. Dietary supplements have long been used to help lower high blood pressure, although supplements are not without their risks and should only be used under the care of a licensed physician.

High Blood Pressure

In most cases of high blood pressure, the American Heart Association says, the underlying cause is unknown. However, some cases of hypertension may be caused by adrenal gland tumors, congenital defects in your blood vessels and certain kidney problems. These factors are known as secondary hypertension, as your high blood pressure occurs secondary to these health problems. Common risk factors associated with high blood pressure include thickening of your arterial walls, hardening of your arteries and excess contraction of your arterioles, or your smallest arteries.

Hypertension Supplements

Dietary supplements have long been used in treating hypertension, although some supplements historically used for this purpose may require further examination to better understand their effectiveness and action in treating high blood pressure. According to Russell B. Marz, a naturopathic physician, licensed acupuncturist and author of "Medical Nutrition From Marz," the following supplements may be helpful in treating your hypertension: fiber, magnesium, calcium citrate, essential fatty acids, fish oil, hawthorn extract, coenzyme Q10 and garlic.

Supplement in Focus

Fish oils, which contain both docosahexaenoic acid and eicosapentaenoic acid, may be helpful in treating many cardiovascular issues. MayoClinic.com says that dietary fish oil supplements may help lower your blood pressure and triglyceride levels while decreasing your risk of heart attack, arrhythmias and stroke. This supplement may also help slow the accumulation of plaque in your arteries. Fish oil is a source of omega-3 fatty acids. Certain fish species have a greater likelihood of being contaminated with methyl mercury and other substances. Choose fish oil supplements prepared by reputable companies.

Additional Information

In most cases, your high blood pressure will usually respond to conservative treatment methods, including dietary supplements. However, your use of natural treatment methods should not supercede other treatment recommendations suggested by your health-care provider. Supplements, like prescription drugs, should be used with caution, because these natural substances may cause significant physiological effects in your body. Some supplements may not be appropriate for you and your specific ailment. Always ask your doctor about what herbs may be right for you.
