Vinegar is a longstanding home health remedy, and recently it has gained a reputation as a metabolism-booster that can help you burn fat and lose weight. Researchers in Japan found that when mice were given acetic acid -- the main component in vinegar -- they did not gain body fat even when fed a high-fat diet. Results were published in the "Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry" in May 2009. More research is clearly needed, and you should consult your doctor before adding vinegar to your diet regimen.
Step 1
Drink 1 tbsp. of vinegar before each meal. If the flavor of straight vinegar is too strong for you, consider diluting it in a glass of water or juice.
Step 2
Use vinegar in your cooking and food preparation. Sprinkle vinegar on salad greens, mix it with oil and spices to make a homemade vinaigrette, stir it into soups and stews to add depth of flavor, use it as a marinade for meat or fish, and add it to stir-fries.
Step 3
Stick with a balanced, reduced-calorie diet as you take vinegar for metabolism-boosting. Weight loss requires eating fewer calories than you burn off, so cutting calories and eating nutritiously will help keep you burn fat and drop pounds.
Step 4
Exercise regularly. Both cardiovascular exercise and strength-training workouts burn calories, speed your metabolism and ensure that any pounds you lose will be fat and not muscle.
