Fasting generally involves consumption of liquids only, but sometimes healthy fruits and vegetables are allowed. The Mayo Clinic recommends a 1 to 2 lb. weight loss per week. However, the average weight loss during a fast is 1 to 2 lb. a day. Most of this weight loss is because your body sheds excess sodium and water. Fasting is an extreme method of weight loss and should only last two to seven days. You should consult your doctor before beginning a fasting regimen.

Step 1

Drink at least eight to 10 8-oz glasses of water every day. Since you do not consume solid foods, sufficient hydration is important to feel satiated.

Step 2

Liquify fresh fruits and vegetables to make your own power drink. Drink fresh fruit and vegetable juice in lieu of meals during your fast.

Step 3

Take a daily multivitamin. While you fast, you are not getting all of the essential vitamins and minerals your body needs, so a multivitamin prevents a nutritional deficiency.

Step 4

Take a break from fasting if you feel fatigued or hungry. Your body is not used to consuming liquids only, so it is OK to insert one day of eating healthy, solid foods before returning to your fast.

Step 5

Slowly incorporate solids into your diet after your fast is complete. Your body has become acclimated to breaking down liquid sources only, and foods that are high in protein and complex carbs may difficult for your body to digest.
